The Right Lead/Left Lead ration enables the rider to distribute the work evenly while riding: this means the time spent at each lead as well as at each gait. Having control over the work while in a circle is very important in order to avoid the creation of muscular asymmetry in the long-term.
When we are riding, we often have the impression that we are working symmetrically while that is not necessarily the case!
We all have a preference for one lead over the other, and we have the tendency to spend more time in it, or on the contrary, we work the side where we have the most difficulty too much. Except that can lead to a lot of stress, early fatigue, and cause muscular asymmetry over time for the horse.
In the majority of cases, the rider will try to balance the work as much as possible and will attempt to be as close to 50/50 as they can, and at each gait. But it’s not always easy!
A little clarification that in certain cases, especially those of horses showing particular locomotive problems, it is advised to work at one lead more than the other. The Equisense app enables you to make sure you respect the recommendations of your veterinarian, coach, or osteopath.
